Despite
their massive size (45 foot, 40 tons), humpback whales hurl themselves
unexpectedly out of the water, acrobatically spinning 30 feet in
the air before spectacularly splashing down. These photos capture
the two-second event in multi-frame, stop-action sequence. Of all
my photos, these are the most challenging. They require anticipating
where the whale will surface, reacting instantly to frame and focus
the shot, keeping the animal in the frame until splashdown and controlling
my excitement until its over.
